Ooops. Missed one.
I missed an update! Last week I went with a friend from work who has a lot more experience than I. It was the usual mix of difficulties, but centring around a set of climbs I hadn’t done before. I didn’t do as well as I usually do, but learnt some stuff, including some terms such as flagging. My friend, who does a lot more bouldering than I have, was demonstrating how when bouldering I should be twisting and moving my knees more to generate height and leverage. I can see why, but was finding it hard to do! This week was a bit more of a wash out. The ‘adult club’ wasn’t on due to the team being knackered from sorting out problems caused by the local flooding we’ve had here, so my housemate and I just climbed together. I was utterly unmotivated and crap though and we flaked out very quickly when I couldn’t really get off the floor on a 6a
Rubbish! I cheered up a bit when I got shown a new route on the bouldering wall which relied on some bridging and twisting. Didn’t quite do it, but learnt a bit. I reckon I’ll be able to do it next week.
Sundays…
Bit of a warm day today. Started on the bouldering wall to still no more progress. It’s getting a little frustrating. I think I need some help
Still, went onto the main wall and completed a 6a, features only climb I couldn’t do last time. Was pretty easy this time too! Then completed a 6a+, half of the ungraded 6b+, and nearly did the 6c from last week but crapped out at the end due to being too tired and warm!
Improvements.
I’m definitely getting better. Did a 5+ without breaking a sweat. Climbed a 6a without complaint, a 6b+ with some shouted up assistance and _almost_ did a 6c. I was just too tired to do one of the big reaches. My current problem is hold blindness. I seem to not see so many holds which would make life a lot easier. Still.. keep on trying…

Made it with a partner this weekend! We climbed a wall with a nice slope on a bunch of 5+ routes. The holds were tougher than expected, probably because you’ve got a nice angle to climb against. Some of them required a good number of smears to get up them! Still, they weren’t that tough looking back, just were surprising. We then tryed the small white with blue tags route on the slope, which was a 6c. Ow. After about the first 4 holds I ended up swapping to grey with red tags, which was a 6b+ and I think I managed that. I ended up using the big feature in the middle and I’m not sure if it counts for that route! After that, back on to the main wall to try the ungraded blue route which we think is a 6b+. There is one move the middle which I just couldn’t do, but I did all the rest, even the really hard bit near the top with really crappy handholds. Quite chuffed!!
